Port of Antwerp Building World's Largest Lock

Financing for the brand new Deurganckdok Lock on the left bank of the River Scheldt has been finalised, the Flemish government has announced. At a size of 68 by 500 metres, the lock will be the biggest sea lock in the world, bigger even than the Berendrecht lock, the current record holder. “It’s not in fact bigger, but much deeper, providing capacity for larger ships to pass,” says Annik Dirckx of the Antwerp port authority.

In a few weeks from now the first ground will be broken in Antwerp for a unique port construction project, namely the largest lock in the world. This massive structure will be built at the head of the Deurganck dock on the left bank of the Scheldt. The port of Antwerp already has the biggest lock in the world, the Berendrecht lock.
